"Eldest Bright", "Dorsai" Interior, Easton Press, Acrylic, 1987

I began to actually understand paint because of the black & white work
I was doing at this time. I've finally abandoned completely the use of
airbrush. Who needs it? It's a big pain to use and clean and in my opinion
kept me from really learning about painting for years. I was at the
National Gallery in Washington, D.C. examining a Frederick Church
painting when it hit me. The textures! The brushmarks! Those things
weren't supposed to be avoided or hidden. That's what makes a painting
a painting. When I paint, I want to paint like this.
